A short-runway airport situated in the wide shallow bay of Traigh Mhòr at the north tip of the island of Barra in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. The airport is unique, being the only one in the world where scheduled flights use a beach as the runway. - operated by Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd. - Special procedures apply to ensure the safety of flights at the airport, which include no public access to the beach when the airport wind sock is flying. A strobe light on the air traffic control tower warns of imminent aircraft movements. - when the airfield is closed it reverts to a public beach - non-standard opening hours (operations vary according to the tides) - cafe in terminal building - car hire available at the airport
