IWM Duxford owns and operates its historic airfield which first opened in 1918 and remains in regular use today. The airfield was built in the latter stages of the First World War to train new pilots. It played an important role in the Battle of Britain. Today the airfield is used by military and general aviation aircraft as well as by private companies based at the museum which operate historic warbirds and other vintage aircraft.
